His daughter and this teen boy had been dating for about a month when the sleeping on the couch incident happened. He seemed uneducated but very respectful. He picked his daughter up every morning in his bicycle to take her to school and do their homework together in the evening. He put up with her teen mood swings and was kind to his youngest daughter and wife. After eight months of dating, his son came home with an alarming story.
Turned out, this boy was homeless. His abusive father committed suicide when he was 15 and his crack-addicted mother abandoned him shortly after. From what his son gathered, he slept on park benches, cheap hotels, or with “friends.” He worked in construction to eat.
Neighbours sometimes fed him, but he went hungry most of the time. And yet every night after completing his homework with his girlfriend, the teen always left with a smile on his face.
That night the dad was waiting to give the teen a key to the house. Rules and expectations were set. He lived in the spare room which was furnished to his liking. He completed school with a dream to be self-employed.
